Forensic Laboratory
The Forensic Science laboratory was established to create a suitable environment to propagate the knowledge of the forensic sciences amongst the students. To this effect, we organize several innovative training sessions as part of the forensic science elective course to impress upon the students the various kinds of analysis that fall under the purview of forensic science and the procedural imperatives that must be followed to ensure a fair trial.
Students learn about the forensic investigative process through a crime This helps students understand the scope and limitations of forensic evidence and analysis and the appropriate forensic procedures that need to be observed.
Equipment
The laboratory is equipped with microscopes, anatomical models, fingerprinting kits, weapons database, commonly used drugs and poisons, blood pattern analysis set-up etc. to create a knowledgeable and varied forensic database for students to learn from and to analyze forensic evidence first-hand.
Activities
Students learn about the forensic investigative process works by participating in a mock crime scene where each team of students will take part in evidence collection, management & forwarding. Laboratory work also includes processes such as latent fingerprinting, fibre analysis, glass and paint chips examination, blood pattern analysis etc.
Impact
The course emphasizes kinesthetic learning i.e. learning by doing. Whether it is investigating a crime scene or comparing two prints for a match, the students experience first hand the procedural fallacies that might have long term implications on the case trial. As such, they are better placed to critically question and challenge the testimony and reports they receive as part of every trial kit.
