Dr. Asim Ur Rehman Ganie

Dr. Aasim Ur Rehman Ganie is currently working as Assistant Professor at the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences, O.P. Jindal Global University. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. and MPhil in Psychiatric Social Work from NIMHANS, Bengaluru. His doctoral work focused on the social, environmental, and psychological factors influencing the psychosocial functioning of children with severe mental illness. He employed group work methods with parents and children with severe mental illnesses to investigate if children behave similarly in a homogeneous group where actions and situations are artificially designed. Dr. Asim holds a Master’s degree in Social Work with a specialization in Mental Health from the University of Kashmir. Dr. Aasim holds a robust background in behavioral and social sciences, coupled with a strong passion for teaching, research, and innovation. He has qualified UGC-NET/JRF and SET in the relevant subject. His professional experience encompasses clinical mental health, child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic and community psychology, psychosocial rehabilitation, program development, research, and advanced data analysis. Dr. Aasim has been instrumental in contributing and implementing the programmes such as Swatantra Clinic at NIMHANS for children in difficult circumstances and Family Support and Well-Being Programme at Government Observation Home for children in Bengaluru. Dr. Aasim is actively involved in conducting training sessions and workshops in psychology, social work, and mental health, and has been invited by various government and non-governmental organizations for these purposes. Moreover, Dr. Aasim has received several awards at national and international conferences in recognition of my contributions to child and adolescent mental health.

Industry Experience

After completing his master’s degree, Dr. Aasim gained valuable two years’ experience working with prestigious organizations such as Childline India Foundation and ActionAid India. As a Project Coordinator with Childline India Foundation, he was dedicated to child protection services, advocating for adherence to the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and promoting a child-centered approach in District Anantnag. His role at ActionAid India involved developing and implementing treatment plans for various mental health conditions, educating communities about mental illness, and conducting training sessions on work ethics and social security. This diverse experience has provided Dr. Aasim with a profound understanding of community-based work, mental health treatment and advocacy and creating safe spaces for children in need of care and protection.

Teaching Experience

Dr. Aasim has two years of teaching experience, specializing in Research Methodology in Social Sciences, Theories of Psychology, Measurement of Social Behavior, Human Development, Child Psychology, Basics of Data Analysis (SPSS, Excel, Atlas.ti, R-Software, AI Academic tools), Introduction to Psychiatry, Psychology of Gender, Counseling and Psychotherapy, and Research-Based Learning. His expertise also includes Learning and Behavioral Theories, Rehabilitation Psychology, Counseling Skills and Techniques, Family Interventions, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Additionally, he has taught MPhil psychiatric social work trainees on psychosocial assessments, interventions in severe mental disorders and neuro-developmental disorders, family and parent interventions, child protection, and community interventions and social work in mental health. For BSc Nursing students at NIMHANS, he has taught papers on sociology and social work, population growth and socio-economic implications, housing and housing programs in India, and the study of social groups, class, society, and communities.

Research Experience

Dr. Aasim, is a prolific researcher with over 30 publications. He is affiliated with several prestigious journals from Sage and Taylor & Francis as a reviewer. His research interests encompass public health, social determinants, functioning and rehabilitation, cultural-specific interventions, child mental health, sociology and social work, contemporary youth issues, counseling and correctional work, children in difficult circumstances, and community psychology. Passionate about exploring the social determinants of mental health, Dr. Aasim is particularly focused on the understanding the role of psychosocial interventions in addressing mental health challenges, especially among vulnerable populations. He has presented numerous papers and symposiums at international conferences across India and globally and has received several best paper awards. Additionally, Dr. Aasim has authored two books on social work and counseling psychology and has received intellectual property rights from the Government of India. He is an active member of various organizations, including IACAPAP, APSWE, and IFSW, and has guided three postgraduate students in their research dissertations.

Clinial Experience

Dr. Aasim has 6 years of clinical experience during his MPhil and Ph.D. work at NIMHANS, Bengaluru. He worked with a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) unit of NIMHANS. The clinical responsibilities during his Ph.D. work included providing psychosocial services to children taking treatment from both inpatient and out-patient departments, detailed clinical, psychosocial, and developmental assessments. He was actively involved in providing psychoeducation, parent management training, behavioural therapy, group therapy, family, and parent interventions to children with psychiatric issues and their parents. During his MPhil programme, his clinical duties equally focused on psychoeducation and learning to conduct supportive work, family and community interventions, behavioural management and psychoeducation to patients and their family’s taking treatment from both out & in-patient services at NIMHANS for variety of psychiatric disorders. Training in assessments also included administration, scoring, interpretation, and report writing of rating scales and psychosocial and developmental assessments of patients with mental and neurological disorders.
