Dr Sulbha Rai

Dr Sulbha Rai is an Assistant Professor at the Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS), O. P. Jindal Global University. She received her Ph.D. award from the University School of Humanities and Social Sciences (USHSS), Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Dwarka, New Delhi. Her Ph.D. thesis is titled “The Invisible Children: A Psychosocial Mapping of the Lives of Children of Commercial Sex Workers”. She pursued her Masters in Criminology in the year 2010 from the LNJN NICFS, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), New Delhi. She was awarded the UGC NET- Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in Criminology in the year 2012. She has also received an Advanced Diploma in Spanish from the Centre for European and Latin American Studies (CELAS), Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

Her research interests are based on an interdisciplinary array largely focused on child rights, crime against women and children, juvenile delinquency, ethnographic study of vulnerable and marginalized groups like the de-notified tribes (DNTs), critical criminology, forensic victimology and victim assistance. She has been actively participating and volunteering for Non-Governmental Organizations that work on social issues, especially related to women and children from marginalized communities.

Teaching Experience

Prior to joining JIBS, Dr Rai was working as Assistant Professor of Criminology under the Department of Behavioral Forensics at the Delhi Campus of National Forensic Sciences University (an Institute of National Importance), Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt of India. She worked at NFSU for more than 2.5 years. She was the Program Coordinator for MA Criminology program. She taught the undergraduate and postgraduate students various subjects like Crime and Society, Fundamentals of Criminology, Theories of Crime Causation, Victimology and Victim Assistance, Forensic Psychology, Introduction to Forensic Science and so on. She has supervised around 15 master’s dissertations.

Besides teaching, she conducted training courses for the in-service officials from police, judiciary, prison administration, forensic medicine experts, etc., from all over the country.

Research Experience

Rai is vigorously pursuing research in the field of criminology and victimology. She has presented research papers in several national and international conferences on themes like victimization of sex workers and their children, structural marginalization of DNTs, ethnic conflicts, etc. She has chaired and co-chaired scientific sessions at national and international conferences, also World Anthropology Congress held in October 2023.  She is dedicated to contributing quality and field-based research in the domain of criminology, victimology and forensic psychology. She is also a Life Member of Indian Society of Criminology.
